John McKay: Short Bio
John McKay has recently retired as an Inspector with the Vancouver
Police Department. He was been a police officer for 36 years,
initially with the RCMP and since 1984 as a member of the
VPD. During that time, he has become an expert in defensive
tactics, crowd control, use of force and personal protection
techniques. Among his many accomplishments, in 2003 he was instrumental
in developing an innovative ‘train the trainers’ protection
strategy for women working in the high-risk street sex trade.
This program received the Women and Cities Award for Unique
Program in 2004. Among the many groups he has worked with,
he has provided training to St. Paul’s Hospital Security, Vancouver
Hospital Security and Code White Teams, BC Place Stadium
Special Event Security, GM Place Special Event Security and
Hosting Staff, Pacific National Exhibition Security, the Ministry
of Social Services in Burnaby, Vancouver Parks and Recreation,
and Every Women’s Health Clinic.
Mr. McKay is an internationally recognized trainer in violence
prevention and personal security. He is a liability and risk
management specialist and is recognized by the Canadian Judiciary
as an expert witness on Use-Of-Force. John McKay is a second-degree
black belt with over 40 years experience in the Martial Arts.
He provides personal protection and use of force training for
security professionals through Use of Force Training Programs.
